EC5 in the Metaverse - Fully Empowering a New Era of Web 3.0
EC5 in the Metaverse - Fully Empowering a New Era of Web 3.0
EC5-51WORLD’s 5th earth clone summit, which is technology-filled and future-oriented, was held on August 18th, 2022, at 51WORLD's newly opened 255,000 m2 metaverse space-51Island. During the conference, 51WORLD released its newly upgraded product matrix, including 1 platform, 2 products and 3 industry applications, which will enable the digital twin industry enter the "L4+W4" stage and contribute to the digitization of Web 3.0 toward a new era.   Yi Li, founder, and CEO of 51WORLD, mentioned that "Oriented to the Web 3.0 era, we are required to possess sufficient technical capabilities to empower our partners and offer products and applications with all-new values to the industry. So far, 51WORLD has formed a new generation of product matrix ranging from platform to product and then to ecology, assisting enterprises in iterating demands and providing new solutions."  ‍As important part of this conference, Yi Li released WDP, a new iteration of the digital twin PaaS platform; MS2, two upgraded metaverse applications, 51Sim, a simulation test platform for autonomous driving; and 51ISE - a new generation industry simulation algorithm platform for three major industry applications, TOC - a twin space operation service platform, and 51CIM – a city information model platform.   As a result of the new generation of product matrix, the conference is full of highlights: All-element scene (AES) goes into mass production at L3, official launch of the 100 Digital Twin City Plan; newly upgraded MS2, a metaverse application, fully empowering the implementation of large-scale meetings and exhibitions in the metaverse; 51Sim adheres its original intention of openness and open source being open + open-source to empower the mass production of Autonomous driving via a data-driven closed loop of a home-grown self-research platform; benchmark use cases in three application directions are available to the public for the first time, and industry applications advance further.  01Autonomous Mass Production of AES at L3 AccuracyA 100 Digital Twin City Plan Officially Launched Since the release of WDP4.0, a new-generation digital twin PaaS platform, in Sep. 2021, 51WORLD has kept a three-monthly iteration rate, dedicated to offering a digital twin creation platform that is of "low threshold, high quality” to every industry. Up to now, over 25,000 developers have worked with 51WORLD to upgrade the new digital twin PaaS platform. As underlying support for the PaaS platform, AES has been upgraded with breakthroughs and is now officially in mass production in the L3 era. At the conference, Yi Li officially announced the "100 Digital Twin City Plan" and pointed out that 51WORLD will upgrade the digital twin base of 100 cities to L3 accuracy as of the end of December this year, starting from August 2022.  "This major upgrade of AES will enable more effectiveness, less required storage space and higher speed," Yi Li stressed at the conference. Among them, as for more effectiveness, Autonomous generation of AES will be greatly beyond the effect of L2, modular generation at L3 is comparable to the accuracy of manual modeling; as for less required storage space, only one-third of the storage space is required compared to that of at L2 in tradition; and as for higher speed, modular generation at L3 just takes 1/2 time that of at L2, which is a significant increase in efficiency. In addition to AES, a simultaneous upgrade is realized for DaaS digital asset library, Editor non-linear editing, API, and Cloud native based on the WDP platform. 02Upgrade of MS2Official Launch of 255,000 m2 Metaverse In the Web3.0 era, every enterprise should be equipped with an exclusive metaverse space, just as necessary as an official website in the Web1.0 era and an APP in the Web2.0 era. The 51WORLD metaverse application provides companies with consumers, goods, and scenarios in the metaverse era. The 51WORLD metaverse applications are characterized by three highlights: immersive and realistic scenarios, unique digital avatar, and open and convenient creator tools. The newly upgraded MS2, with an extra-large space of 255,000 m2, is a metaverse application designed for large-scale activities such as conferences, expos, etc. The entire venue is in the shape of a five-petal flower, of which each petal is an independent exhibition hall of 51,000 m2.   Besides Hall A, which was firstly opened for EC5, the rest four halls will be opened one after another from September to December.  Unlike 2D video conference that brings a uniform communication feeling, the metaverse enables interaction that shows individuality and a sense of expectation because of the unpredictability of what will happen next.   0351SimAccelerated Closed-loop Driven by Data for Autonomous Driving 51Sim is the domestic auto industry simulation software developed by 51WORLD with a R&D investment of over 100 million RMB over 5 years. Up till now, 51Sim has formed a sound product ecology, with the implementation of closed-loop cloud simulation that is driven by data, which is independent and controllable, and high confidence perception simulation that is deeply integrated with software and hardware, and full-stack simulation that is integrated with software and hardware through open source.  Right now, Autonomous driving is on the eve of mass production. 51Sim has formed a full industry ecology targeting the market demand and built a series of benchmark cases, such as HAOMO.AI (a data-driven cloud simulation), Horizon Robotics (a computing platform for perceptual simulation), a multi-vehicle platform for SMVIC, etc. 51Sim will also keep in line with the market to accelerate the implementation of China's Autonomous driving mass production through deep industry integration, domestic open-source controllability, and a data-driven closed loop.  04Three Industrial ApplicationsEnable the Full Entry of Digital Twin into L4+W4 Stage Accuracy Level and Application Dimension are two keywords in describing the industry application of digital twin, where digital twin scene is divided by five levels from L1 to L5, and there are five application stages from W1 to W5. Yi Li said in his speech, "Currently, the industrial application has evolved to L4+W4 stage. Oriented to a new trend, we will present the debut of benchmark cases of three industrial applications."   01 51ISE, a new-generation industry simulation algorithm platform W4, a new stage of deepening evolution of the digital twin, is in dire need of support from a cross-industry simulation platform. 51ISE comes into being as the times require, which integrates industry algorithm simulation, engineering system simulation, natural environment simulation, social activity simulation, and emergency simulation in one and has been applied in fields such as industry, energy, water conservancy, rail, transportation, etc. Numerous cases have been implemented so far. Take smart factory as an example, 51ISE can restore every robot arm, every part and every craftsmanship exactly like those in the real world. Such an advanced approach for manufacturing can be used to build a digital twin factory efficiently and cost-effectively, and applied in the full lifecycle of simulation for factory design in its early stage, factory construction in its middle stage, and factory operation in its later stage.   As part of the construction of a smart factory of CREG (China Railway Engineering Equipment Group), 51WORLD enables auxiliary decision-making in terms of production process optimization, quality control, O&M of equipment and management of energy and carbon peak & neutrality, with the ISE platform as the base and the digital twin technology as the core, thereby contributing to the digitization of the factory.   02 TOC, an operation service platform for twin spaces Distinct from traditional IOC products, the TOC platform features six core capabilities: realistic digital twin scene, Spatial-temporal computing, open editing, full process simulation, presence services, and multi-terminal interaction. Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City (YZBSTC) in Hainan Province, which is the first to integrate the capabilities of the 51WORLD TOC platform, is empowered with a digital twin for park management, comprehensively reflecting trends of all aspects and speeding up digital construction. Moreover, a second upgrade is realized for TOC Low Carbon Smart Community, which provides managers with more smart decision support based on green energy construction and investment by region-wide carbon monitoring, carbon planning simulation and carbon emission prediction.   03 51CIM, a new generation information model platform for digital twin cities "As a city seeks growth, infrastructure is required at first. Likewise, the infrastructure for the digital economy is required for its development. Undoubtedly, city-level L4 is precisely one of the infrastructures for the digital city of the future," Yi Li believes.   51CIM creates an infrastructure base in terms of data use path, scene use path, scene accuracy, interaction depth, etc., for further advancing the construction of smart cities. It is characterized by multi-source data fusion, multi-precision scenario operation, high-performance computing, efficient & open maintenance, and re-use of data elements, which can meet requirements for system construction, such as wide projects range, long time period, high data security, outcome data reusability, etc. 05 Eight Industry ExpertsElaborate on Industry Development in the Metaverse Era 51WORLD invited experts and scholars from various fields, such as government, technology, finance, consumption, etc., in the metaverse forum in the afternoon to share their ideas.  As a representative of the government, Niu Hailong, Executive Deputy Director of Beijing Central Business District Management Committee, shared his thoughts on "Beijing CBD Accelerates the Construction of a Digital CBD to be a Benchmark District with Global Influence". Different Levels of Digital Twin: L1-L5
Different Levels of Digital Twin: L1-L5
Integrating elements of visual reality, geographic information, physical simulation, and free interaction, 51WORLD created AES (All Element Scene) in 2018, which has accelerated the digitalization of many industries with digital twin technology. The company also classified the restorations of the physical world, according to their visual accuracies, into five levels from L1 to L5, a standard widely adopted in grading digital twin scenes.▲All Element Scene at 51WORLD EC3 Conference51WORLD's R&D as well as applications have been greatly improved after years of toiling in the digital twin industry.Today, 51WORLD once again upgraded its AES : including L1 to L5, and proposed five specific application stages from W1 to W5 for the first time. As always, 51WORLD keeps the industrial demands in mind and exploits its years of experimentation in the industry. Integrated with elements such as multi-source data, physical parameters, and texture accuracy, the enterprise came up with a new scenario grading standard, offering a more refined and more reliable base for digital twin. 01 Everything is based on data-a link between virtual and real world. The real world is made up of a collection of natural elements such as mountains, rivers and trees, as well as an all-encompassing combination of things created by human beings such as buildings, roads and vehicles. However, in the virtual world, everything is about data, and data is everything. One must be sure about one key question before replicating the real world with AES: what is AES?AES is the digital expression of everything in the world. Although it is composed of virtual data, it can express the hyper realistic world. Simply put, it presents everything in the physical world into the virtual world, and the degrees of restored accuracy are classified into L1-L5, namely city-level L1, regional-level L2, scene-level L3, component-level L4, part-level L5. So, what capabilities does AES have? How can it replicate the real world?Since it is a "replica", all data are from the real world. Based on its multi-source data compatibility, AES can access and process data from GIS, OSGB, DOM / DEM, BIM, CAD and so on. All physical elements from the real world, such as terrain, buildings, roads, and waters, can be dynamically adjusted by AES, to reconstruct everything in the virtual world. The first and foremost capability of a digital twin scene is to gather and manage all the elements in the real physical world with colossal data and super-efficient dynamic loading, as well as to provide an interactive operating system through real-time rendering, thus generating a dynamic virtual world that is no different from the real one. This ability to construct fully simulated 3D dynamic scenes consists of the following eight basic capabilities:· Automated generation based on DOM and GIS data: AI algorithms can automatically generate urban scenes from DOM and GIS data.· Reconstruction and generation based on OSGB data: Computer semantic recognition algorithm can automatically lightweight reconstruct based on oblique photography / lidar scanning,· Automated generation based on BIM data: Automated transformation and generation based on BIM models, while retaining the catalogs and attributes of all components and parts· Procedural generation of specific scenes: Rapid generation of specific scenes based on procedural algorithms, such as transmission stations and power grids· HD map-based generation: Generation of high-precision road scenes based on the reconstruction of point cloud models of HD map· Construction based on massive digital asset library: Rapidly build scenes based on matching the features from massive digital asset library· Reconstruction and generation based on photo topology: 3D topology reconstruction and generation model based on real photos· Rapid construction based on PaaS platform: Secondary editing of scenes based on PaaS platform.02 Five Levels to Accurately Restore the Required ScenesAES can be divided into five levels, according to the different needs from macro to micro, with the higher level indicating a higher degree of visual, geographical and physical accuracy.1. City levelThe primary city-level simulated scenes, based on GIS data, are mainly used to restore large-scale pictures such as the topography, mountains, lakes and urban layouts. The coordinate accuracy is within 5 meters, and large-scale scenes of tens of thousands of square kilometers can be restored.2. Regional levelThe intermediate regional-level simulated scenes can restore urban buildings, road information, traffic flow, and green plants in a more detailed way than the city-level scenes. The coordinate accuracy is within 5 meters, and it can restore large-scale scenes of thousands of square kilometers.3. Scene levelAs the most commonly applied scenes at current stage, the L3 simulated scenes can truthfully restore building details, dynamic traffic flows, and even the shades of light and shadow through data of GIS and satellite remote sensing. The coordinate accuracy is within one meter, which can restore medium-sized scenes of hundreds of square kilometers.4. Component levelThe super simulation scene, with a coordinate accuracy to the level of centimeter, can restore the centimeter details of road markings, traffic lights, vehicles and pedestrians in the city. It can be employed to construct small street scenes within one square kilometer.5. Part levelThis level of simulation can be called the real all-element simulation, in which people couldn’t tell the virtual from the real even when close-ups. With a more accurate restoration effect, even the textures of flowers and trees, and the shades of real-time lighting can be fully synchronized with those in the real world, which can be used to dynamically drive twin device model components with real-time data.03 Technical Capabilities Highlight Through Actual ApplicationsWhat are the application scenarios of AES L1-15?51WORLD divides the applications of AES into five stages: W1 visualization, W2 data fusion, W3 data-driven, W4 simulation, and W5 intelligent decision-making. After years of technical trials and practical applications, 51WORLD has successfully implemented use cases in each stage according to different requirements. We will elaborate the advantages of W1-W5 applications one by one with specific cases.1. VisualizationHigh-quality 3D scene can be generated with AES through real-time rendering, which can lend the users a sense of reality with realistic scenes. A wide range of applications can be categorized into this stage, including those in the metaverse scene, such as annual corporate party, meetings, interviews, etc. 2. Data FusionData fusion perfectly meets the demands of government and enterprise users, as they can converge and present a variety of data in a unified spatio-temporal model. These applications provide operators with quick and effective managing skills, which help to administer the city or park in one scene.3. Data-drivenAt this stage, the AES can turn static into dynamic, which can keep the virtual world in sync with the real one. For example, in a smart traffic scenario, the real-time changes of the traffic flow need to be dynamically synchronized in the digital twin scene, to achieve “what you see is what you get” for all elements.4. SimulationAt this stage, AES can accurately simulate the movement of objects in the real world, and even predict the changing tendencies. Simulation is widely used in scenarios of smart factories, smart ports, and smart subway to optimize operations.5.Intelligent Decision-making Intelligent decision-making is mostly applied in autonomous driving simulation tests, which can train AI on the basis of simulated environments and colossal case library. Powerful data analysis makes it possible to predict the potential trends in the physical world when circumstances change in a simulated scenario, so as to avoid risks in the real world, thus making it more efficient, safe and better. The formulation of AES data and standards has laid the foundation for building a real and complete digital twin world, and provided the underlying technical support for 51WORLD’s vision of cloning the earth. Be it a high-precision rendering scene or a large-scale global landscape, the ultra-efficient dynamic loading technology and ultra-large-scale data access capabilities allow users to embark on a free journey of going deeper and higher. In the future, 51WORLD will continue to hone its AES and deliver effective digital twin applications with ecological partners, to facilitate the digital transformation of the government and enterprises, accelerating the development of the digital economy and contributing to building a digital China.

Professor Gao Yanli: Digital Twin Opens the Door of a Wonderful Era
Professor Gao Yanli: Digital Twin Opens the Door of a Wonderful Era
Editor’s note:With the rollout of state policies as well as the setup of national new areas such as Xiong’an, the digital twin has penetrated into all aspects of the smart city from the traditional manufacturing industry, greatly enriching people’s imagination of the future urban form.Meanwhile, we should fully understand the complexity of digital twin technology. Enterprises that underestimate the difficulties of implementing digital twin, being reluctant to invest in R&D and unwilling to seek industrial collaboration, are unlikely to succeed or go too far in the market. In this article, we are honored to invite Professor Gao Yanli, chief expert of a smart city at the CAICT, a scientific research institution directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), to catch a glimpse of this splendid digital twin world and envision the future direction of digital twin technology.Gao Yanli, chief expert of a smart city at the CAICTDigital twins can be regarded as the quintessence of the digital age. The straightforward and prevalent concept that combines the virtual and the real opens the door of intelligence, providing people with new insights into understanding and changing the world even without venturing out.Digital twin cities successfully address the two issues of smart city architecture integration and governance collaboration, pushing the construction of smart cities to new heights. However, we should be sober that digital twin technology is complex and the industry should not blindly follow the trend. We ought to be persistent in creating the hard-core products of digital twins, to be worthy of this exquisite, mysterious and wonderful digital twin era.01 The digital twin revolutionizes the worldThe digital twin is prevailing in various industries. It has been a buzzword in the last two or three years at home and abroad, with a stunning number of studies and researches. The concept has been identified by many institutions as one of the top strategic technology trends that affect the world.National ministries such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Science and Technology, rolled out policies and supporting programs to promote the basic research and applications of digital twins in the industrial and urban fields. Local governments are scrambling to build the first digital twin city while the industry is racing to come up with the latest digital twin solutions in order to take the lead in this cutting-edge technology. The digital twin has permeated the society in fields of the government, industries, factories, and cities. It has become the law of digital development about which everyone is talking about. That’s why the industries, capitals, and policies are rushing into this technology.Digital twins are indeed popular now.Conceptually, the digital twin reaches a wide range of audiences in only a couple of years as the buzzword is vivid and straightforward. Technologically, the ever-changing information technologies have made most people deeply convinced in the vision of digital twins. From single-point applications to integrated innovations, the digital twin is the milestone in China’s information-oriented development, and it may be the starting point of humans striding into the intelligent era. Exciting roads await. In terms of values, as China is reforming its administrative system, constructing a city of digital twin will reshape the urban digital genes and modernize the governance system. The digital twin redefines intelligent industrial parks, creating a new model of multi-dimensional performance management while the digital twin factories provide the best solutions for digitalizing the whole procedure of manufacturing including design, production, and assembling. As for the digital twin of the human body, it is opening up a new world of medical services with its unique perspective.Digital twin transforms the world. As the ancient Chinese Sage Lao Tse once stated that all things under heaven sprung from the existed and the existed sprung from the non-existed, the digital twin exemplifies the relationship of the existed and the non-existed in virtualizing the real world. The ubiquitous perception and integration, the interaction between the virtual and the real, they support and complement each other. The digital twin enables accurate mapping and perceptive insights even without venturing outside. In controlling the moving with the static and manipulating the real with the virtual, digital twin maps out influential strategies based on the intangible.Digital twin changes the industry rules, optimizes the development path and remodels operation, providing new ideas, perspectives and methods for various industries. It greatly shortens the development path of the industry and triggers profound technological changes in the industry’s systems, mechanisms, structures and rules. In digitalizing everything from macro to micro, a digital twin is pivotal in revolutionizing the world.02 Digital twin reshapes the governance systemThough significant progress has been made in the system cloud and data sharing, smart city construction still hits two bottlenecks, one in technology integration and the other in governance collaboration. Most intelligent city construction is still in its infancy of industrial information building, for want of technical and business architectures for the integrated urban governance. Hardware and software infrastructure, data, algorithms, technical capabilities, toolsets, and block applications are difficult to be incorporated into one architecture, to form a scalable functional system for further iteration. A vacuum exists in discrete, ineffective and inefficient managing systems. It is a daunting task to synchronize the management of different regions, lines and blocks.Digital twin reconstructs the overall architecture of smart cities. In terms of technologies, the digital twin city model platform incorporates the underlying infrastructure, static and dynamic data, core system and technical capability, applications and supporting system, achieving collaborative governance and the integration of the real and the virtual. The underlying infrastructure, consisting of traditional information infrastructure and the new infrastructure, reshapes the urban digital genes and creates an intelligent operating environment with its powerful abilities to perceive, transmit, compute and control. Therefore, the advent of digital twin cities provides an opportunity for and chart the course of reconstructing the overall architecture of a smart city and specifies the levels and paths of integration. By establishing a collaborative platform of the urban brain, the digital twin city connects the systems of urban management, ecological governance, traffic control, market supervision, emergency response, public security, etc.Driven by major events and special scenarios, based on the digital twin city model platform and equipped with its integrated data, algorithms and tools, the digital twin city is able to formulate a closed-loop procedure of proactive awareness, preemptive governance, and optimized plan, realizing coordinated management of urban governance.Digital twin virtualizes public services. Typical features such as global vision, accurate mapping, simulation, virtual-real interaction and intelligent intervention of digital twin cities are accelerating the innovation of urban governance and services, bringing about a number of super applications with a global perspective. As the representative scenarios of digital twin cities lie mostly in urban governance, such as planning, constructing, ecosystem, market and traffic, the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 expedites the digitalization of the whole society and speeds up the implementation of virtualized public services. Digitalized contactless post-Internet life experiences such as online education, medical treatment and cultural performances greatly enrich the life of the public and give the citizens more choices. In the future, the urban form will lean towards digital aggregation and physical separation. The digital twin is devoted to improving modern governance. The COVID-19 pandemic exposes serious deficiencies in the global governance system such as the incapable emergency response mechanism, inadequate disease control plans, inaccurate information release, lagging public opinion guidance, inadequate resource allocation and insufficient decision-making ability. Although smart cities have played a significant role in containing the epidemic, the problems of unscheduled resources, unanalyzed data, unorganized manpower and inefficient network persist. Cooperative citizens and responsible local governments have become the backbone of China’s fighting against the epidemic. As Lao Tse pointed out that action should be taken before a thing has made its appearance and order should be secured before disorder has begun, the all-element expression, visualization of multidimensional data and scenes, spatial computing, overlaying analysis, simulation and remote control of the digital twin city as well as the derived abilities to identify urban risks, observing city operation, tracking trajectory, controlling events, deducing, simulating emergency plans and allocating resources, echo with the demands of modern governance in innovation, coordination, prevention, supervision and organization, making it a major booster for improving the governance system. The wave of new infrastructure is accelerating the development of digital twin cities. Previously, the precise mapping and virtual-real interaction of a digital twin city were largely dependent on the IoT, and as China’s new infrastructure unfolds, it has expanded to assimilate all the components of the new infrastructure, including 5G, IoT, edge computing, data centers, as well as the intelligent transformation of municipal facilities, industrial equipment and public services.By means of intensive spatial layout, the city will form a new overall structure of ubiquitous identifying, perceiving, connecting and computing, to intelligently define everything. It will unleash the operations and services of the infrastructure for the public, enabling the digital transformation of all walks of life. The massive construction of the new infrastructure will greatly lower the cost of building a digital twin city and strongly support the simultaneous operation of the virtual and the real, thus speeding up the construction of the digital twin city.03 The journey of digital twins: a long way to goTo implement a digital twin is more complex than imagined. Enormous basic theories need to be deeply studied, the huge number of technical solutions need to be explored, massive application scenarios need to be verified and colossal mechanisms need to break through before a digital twin really accomplishes precise mapping, twin parallel and the virtual serving the real, be it a factory, a city or a human body. The digital twin is a tremendous project of intellectual integration of knowledge, technologies, data, algorithms, tools and applications, thereby needing a powerful supporting industrial ecology. For creating a digital twin city, depicting the appearance is one thing, while accurately expressing the city’s content, personality, characteristics and rules with technical means such as models, data, algorithms and tools, is another. In the underlying new infrastructure, the lack of reasonable plans and specifications for the intensive layout of urban space, the invisible social relationships between urban elements and the uncertainty of operating rules are all insurmountable obstacles for digital twin cities. Some domestic enterprises are more inclined to earn fast money. They churn out low-quality products, invest little on R&D and are reluctant to go deep into technological innovation. Some ride the tide of digital twins after the concept has been popularized.Instead of actively exploring the technology, they labeled the existing products as digital twins and introduced them into the market, seriously disrupting the industry and confusing public understanding. Given the complexity of digital twins, enterprises that underestimate the difficulties of implementing digital twin, being reluctant to invest in R&D and unwilling to seek industrial collaboration, are unlikely to succeed or go too far in the market.Currently, it is pressing to construct the digital twin cities while the technical solutions are far from mature. Although some encouraging progress has been made in visualizing city modeling, there is still a long way to go. Therefore, in order to promote the implementation of digital twin cities, on the one hand, the government should actively unleash the data and related resources to pave the way for piloting digital twin cities. On the other hand, the mechanisms should be integrated to establish adaptive organizational and business structures. The industry should actively build a complementarily cooperative ecology, to consistently verify the implementation of the solutions. Scientific research institutions should lead their way in innovation and strengthen relevant visionary basic research, removing the obstacles for governments and industries in implementing the digital twin cities.Never forget why you started, and you can accomplish your mission. Like every revolutionary technology, digital twin cities were questioned at the very beginning. People worried that in the gigantic network of a digital twin city, the city’s activities would all be under surveillance. It will be like a digital prison in which the citizens lose privacy and their actions are monitored. The concern is not without reason. For brutal managers, a digital twin city might be a disaster for the people but for the righteous ones, a digital twin city will increase the well-being of the people.Powerful technical means make the city smarter, more harmonious and efficient and the service more diverse, convenient, proactive and personalized. The management of the intelligent city is shifting from governance to services. In constructing a digital twin city, only by elevating the well-being of the people can it go far and steadily in the future.Digital twins open the door of understanding and changing the world, pushing digitalization and intelligent transformation to an admirable height. It might be substituted by more advanced technology later, but fortunately, the new wonderful era has just begun. Let us embrace it and create a bright future together!
51WORLD Launches Digital Twin Water Industry Line
51WORLD Launches Digital Twin Water Industry Line
More than 70 % of the surface of this blue planet we live on is covered by water. For 51WORLD, to make a digital twin of the water is an important step towards cloning the earth.Generally, China’s water resources are insufficient and they vary greatly in different regions and seasons. Therefore, it is imperative for us to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property in the event of floods, to utilize water resources efficiently, and to protect the water environment effectively. To simulate water bodies is extremely difficult as it often involves processing massive data and entails a complex governance system that affects each other. The technical bottleneck of incorporating watersheds, rivers, lakes, and reservoir pipelines into one scene and the lack of digital twin models further compound the simulation.▲Digital twin simulation of the rise and fall of the water levelsSince last year, with the support of all-element scenarios and cooperated with leading partners in water services, 51WORLD has gone deep into the information technology, bringing new ideas and new technologies to the industry.51WORLD believes that the natural waters and urban pipeline networks will be manageable in the same scene, multi-source data will be visualized and replicated in digital twin scenarios, which helps the personnel respond quickly and makes the public better understand the water industry. Therefore, 51WORLD has launched the digital twin industry line of major application scenarios such as urban water supply, flood defense, drought relief, and ecological governance, which has been landed in a number of provinces and cities at home and abroad.01 Water Resources Protection and Ecological ManagementClear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. As water protection has become a manifesto of the Chinese government, 51WORLD makes a digital twin of the watersheds, rivers and water bodies in the natural ecology, and provides targeted solutions for ecological management, pollution sources control, indicators monitoring and flood defense.Among them, the “Three Smart Lakes” of Yunnan Province, 51WORLD’s major industry project in the field of water environmental protection, enables the administrators to deduce the water quality to observe the distribution of pollutants in the lake over a period of time and displays the tributaries impacting the lake’s mid-point water quality to trace the pollutants.▲Scene replication of 3000 square kilometersThree Smart Lakes is a key project under the direction of the Fuxian Lake Administration of Yuxi City and guided by Yunnan Provincial Committee. It is an implementation of the action plan of strengthening ecological environment protection by the Yunnan Province and a concrete measure of protecting the nine lakes on the plateau. In a few weeks, together with local water management enterprises and environmental protection research institute, 51WORLD quickly replicated a total of nearly 3,000 square kilometers of digital twin scenes of Fuxian Lake, Xingyun Lake, Qilu Lake, and surrounding watersheds, and built a set of ecological supervision system, facilitating systematic perception, scientific decision-making, resourceful management, and effective operation. In the project, 51WORLD constructed a system to monitor and perceive the water, environment, meteorology, and soil conditions, which were presented in digital twin scenes.▲The rise of the lake modelThe system loaded the water quality data collected by the sensors deployed in the lake and visualized them with different shades of colors according to the degree of water pollution. At the same time, the system demonstrated the changes in water quality in a given period with the analyzed results over time displaying on both sides of the panels.By replicating the water quality and the impact of the surrounding rivers on the lake, the managers were capable of visually observing the water quality of the lake and quickly making corresponding measures.▲Water pollution deductionWater volume is one of the key indicators of monitoring the water. The digital twin “Three Smart Lakes” could detect and track the flows and volumes of the lake and its tributaries, displaying the whole process and elements of water resources utilization. In addition to replicating the present, the system was able to predict to some extent.Equipped with the water model algorithm and combined with the visual scenes, 51WORLD could predict the changes of water volumes, the evolution of water pollution and environment protection tendencies, enabling the managers to watch the predicted results in person.Ecological law enforcement is another daily task of the water management department. By accessing the cameras, the intelligent law enforcement module of the system connected the virtual scenes with the real scenes in order to monitor the later in real-time.As for the UAVs and unmanned ships, the system mapped out real-time patrol routes in the digital twin scenes of the lakes and realistically represented the law enforcement process from a third perspective, thus helping reasonable allocation of the task forces and ensuring water safety and ecological stability.Intelligent law enforcement simulation Similar to the “Three Smart Lakes”, other intelligent water projects can realize the rapid embedding and two-way interaction of all-element 3D scenes on the webpage by accessing the third-party Web of 51WORLD SuperAPI, to flexibly get the eco-environmental protection data of the administration bureau for the system’s subsequent development and data update.02 Urban water supply, drainage, and flood defenseWater supply and drainage systems are indispensable for urban planning. Relying on its cutting-edge digital twin capability, 51WORLD replicates urban water supply and drainage networks, sewage treatment plants, and the distribution of rivers and lakes in the 3D scenes of urban construction, providing the basis for making relevant decisions. On the digital twin backplane, 51WORLD represents the water supply areas, sources of the water, pumping stations, distribution points, pipeline network directions, and water plant locations, providing assistance for decision-makers in planning the water supply system.▲A planning map of the water supply systemApart from replicating the scenes, the digital twin can display the locations of water plants in 3D scenes in the form of POI, and get access to crucial water quality indicators such as the color, turbidity, residual chlorine, chemical oxygen demand, total bacteria, total coliforms, heat-resistant coliforms, etc., to ensure the security of urban water supply. At the same time, real-time video information such as UAVs patrolling and fixed-point cameras in key areas of water sources can also be connected to the digital twin system, to identify emergencies such as intrusion and water pollution. As flood defense is closely related to the lives and properties of the people, it charts the course of digital twin water applications. At present, 51WORLD is able to provide emergency demonstrations, real-time surveillance in flood-prone areas, and evacuation in disaster-stricken regions.▲Flood inundation analysisThese features have been well received by customers overseas. In the Singapore Smart City Management System, a digital twin built for Singapore’s top developer Surbana Jurong and the Singaporean Government, 51WORLD replicated the scenes of the whole nation, in which it deduced different scopes of the inundated urban areas according to different scales of floods and visualized them in 3D, providing assistance for decision-makers in fighting against the floods.03 The advent of the digital twin water industry2020 marks the last year of the “13th Five-Year Plan” for promoting water conservancy towards informatization in China. According to the plan, China aims to build a water conservancy system featuring intelligent water applications, open information, intensive infrastructure, safe network, and optimized security across China by the end of this year. China’s water conservancy informationization has been full-fledged since then. As the plan unfolds, the digital twin applications of water conservancy also usher in their achievements. In terms of technologies, The Internet of Things, big data and cloud computing are gradually being assimilated into the water conservancy industry, promoting the construction of China’s command system of flood and drought defense, and the establishment of the backbone networks across China while the intelligent models have been operated in major projects such as flood forecasting and cross-region water diversion. In addition, geographic information, water networks and water conservancy projects are incorporated into one scene since numerous water monitoring terminals have collected massive relevant data. In short, the improvement of the IoT devices and water information networks has laid the foundation for applying digital twin in the water industry.▲Swan Lake smart water solutionsAs for governmental funds, the state is encouraging more investment into water informationization. In 2017, the total amount of China’s investment in water conservancy information technologies reached about 21.29 billion yuan while in 2018, the number came up to 24.05 billion yuan. Research institute predicted that it would grow at a CAGR of around 12% from 2018 to 2023.On the other hand, investment in water ecological management went up year by year. The State Council issued an Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution in 2015, in which it expected that about 4 to 5 trillion yuan were needed by 2020 to achieve corresponding targets, of which the local governments were required to contribute about 1.5 trillion yuan. In terms of demands, more than 1.2 million river chiefs and rangers have been installed across China as a strategic measure to reform the ecological system and build a beautiful China. It is a market of huge potentials and it is promising to carry out water management efficiency in the digital twin scenarios. In addition, the public becomes increasingly concerned about water quality, urban drainage, the treatment of polluted waters and ecological protection. It is also necessary for water administrators to respond to public concerns in a digital way. All these have contributed to pushing 51WORLD to further promote the digital twin industry line of the water businesses.Relying on its original digital twin technology, 51WORLD will continue to forge in-depth cooperation with industry partners and put forward more effective and down-to-earth water solutions, to build a smart bridge between “clear waters and green mountains” and “mountains of gold and silver”.

Another National Benchmark Landed! 51WORLD Helps Nanjing Jiangbei New Area to Build the First Digital Twin City
June 7 marked the official completion of the smart city command center of the CBD in Jiangbei New Area.▲The handover ceremonyThe system, co-developed by 51WORLD and Nanjing Unicom, portrayed the landscape, presented the trend, and deduced the future of the area with the most advanced digital twin technology in China. Equipped with various sensors and incorporated with the 5G network, NB-IoT, BIM, and AI, the digital twin CBD was able to achieve global awareness, data sharing, cross command, and accurate feedback.▲The digital twin CBD in Jiangbei New AreaAt the handover ceremony, Wang Dongning, the CBD office director, said that the construction of the CBD smart city manifested the CBD had always attached great importance to high techs, and he emphasized that in the future, information integration technology should be assimilated into the technical means, working methods and achievements presentation.Wang Dongning further pointed out that the smart city command center was a bold venture into the combination of information technology, computer system, decision-making system, and visual image processing technology.01 The first digital twin cityAs one of the 19 state-level new areas approved by the State Council and the only one in Jiangsu Province, Nanjing Jiangbei New Area strategically positions itself as the pilot area of innovation, the demonstration area for new-type urbanization, the hub for modern industries in the Yangtze River Delta region and the major platform for opening-up and cooperation in Yangtze River Economic Belt.According to a 2019 district guideline on smart city construction, Nanjing Jiangbei New Area aspired to construct itself as the first digital twin city in China by 2025, promoting the virtualization of city elements, real-time urban operation and coordinated smart governance with digital twin technology.Against this backdrop, a smart city command center with the major functions of smart construction, intelligent governance and enterprise service came into being. Utilizing 51UrbanData digital backplane construction technology, 51WORLD restored the large scenes of the 25.4 square kilometers of the CBD and meticulously presented core areas such as the Health Center and Qinglong Green Belt and major transportation hubs such as the Dingshan overpass and Jiangbei Avenue Expressway. Overlaid with the dynamic traffic flow, the digital twin CBD represented a lively picture of its real-world counterpart.▲Jiangbei Avenue Expressway02 Smart construction: the present and the future of urban constructionAs Nanjing aims to build another city center around the CBD, a large number of high-standard projects have sprung up in recent years. In order to better manage urban construction, the smart city system accurately presented the qualities and progress of the projects in real-time.A global view of the large scenes of the 25.4 square kilometers in the CBD was generated in the digital twin scenario. As for a specific area, viewers could see corresponding information such as functional area planning, land planning, municipal infrastructure construction, and project progress, with urban planning legends indicating different natures of land utilization.▲International Health Center planningThe system displayed the details of the key projects with data panels, including construction and management information, progress warning, equipment access on the site, etc.In terms of progress management, it adopted the BIM model to visually show the progress of the project and distinguish between the undone and the completed, presenting an unobstructed picture of progress status and providing a comparison of the planned and actual progress.▲BIM model for projects under construction5G-supported UAVs, a feature of the smart city construction, could patrol specific lines and respond to emergencies. As the eye of the sky in the CBD, the drones were able to observe the traffic conditions on the ground, take photos and videos of emergencies, monitor the construction at any time, distinguish the cover situation of the naked soil, and identify illegal construction.03 Smart governance: down-to-earth functions after numerous tryoutsSmart governance consisted of city management, urban security, and environmental protection. Equipped with terminal IoT sensors or other data devices, the system generated relevant warnings after background judgment, which were incorporated into the digital twin backplane for presentation.▲Parking managementIn terms of urban management, the system had designed down-to-earth functions such as city environment supervision, dirt trucks regulation and parking control. Similar consideration was also given to modules of urban security and environmental protection.▲Dust controlTaking dust control as an example, the viewer could check the index in real-time and the system would issue an alarm if anything unusual happened. Then the managers were notified to deal with the event, achieving the closed-loop of processing.“Each function is then modified demand of the team and the CBD office after repeated investigation, research, and communication. In this process, the CBD office gets more and more expectant of the smart city system while the system itself becomes increasingly perfect and down to earth,” commented Zheng Yingya of the 51WORLD Digital City Division.04 Digital twins continue to boost Jiangbei New Area constructionNanjing Jiangbei New Area has previously proposed to deliver the best service and build the most intelligent city by 2021. Wang Dongning, the CBD office director, pointed out that there were three hurdles to overcome for the future development of the smart city system.First, how to make the system play a greater role on the basis of existing functions, to better fit the regional development of the CBD in scope as well as in-depth;Second, how to wisely combine technology with management, organization, and processing procedures;Third, how to engage more people, institutions, and enterprises into building the intelligent city system.▲Restoration of regional landmark buildingsIn the future, 51WORLD will maintain close cooperation with Nanjing Unicom to continuously provide top-notch digital twin service for the smart city system of the CBD in Jiangbei New Area, and, with its original technology, make a contribution to modernizing and transforming Jiangbei New Area.
51WORLD’s Cloud Mirror System Helps Implement the Digital Twin Airport
51WORLD’s Cloud Mirror System Helps Implement the Digital Twin Airport
At night, the grand and brightly-lit digital twin airport is hustling and bustling with planes and ground vehicles. On each route, the wing status of the aircraft, whether the landing gear is opened, the plane’s speed, altitude, latitude, and longitude are synchronized in real-time, presenting a lively picture of the whole airspace.▲Cloud mirror system interface demoSounds like an aviation simulation game? It is materialized in the cloud mirror system developed by 51WORLD and China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology. Unlike the game, the digital twin airport has access to the real-time data of aviation, terminals, and ground operations, achieving “what you see is what you get”, which helps to improve operational efficiency and reduce management costs to a great extent.Covid-19 boosts intelligent airport constructionThe sudden outbreak of the new coronavirus has made the global civil aviation industry suffer from a cold winter that has not been seen in decades. The Airports Council International said in a report that the pandemic would reduce global passengers by two-fifths in 2020, while the airport’s revenue would be slashed by approximately 50 percent and the total loss would exceed $76 billion. Global carriers are also expected to undergo a 44 percent year-on-year decline in passenger revenue this year. Therefore, it is imperative to use digital twin, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other technological means to elevate the efficiency of the operation and management of the shipping hub. Meanwhile, as a crucial component of traditional infrastructure, the airport plays a significant role in safeguarding the livelihood of the community and guaranteeing economic development.▲Aircraft take-off and land in real-timeIn January, the Civil Aviation Administration issued an action plan for China’s airport construction, in which it put forward to build safe, green, intelligent, and humane airports by 2035 by means of intelligent measures. 2020 marks the beginning of the construction and the Civil Aviation Administration has established 23 demonstration projects of smart airport construction in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Despite strong support from the civil aviation authorities, technically, it is not easy to upgrade the traditional airports to the digital twin level.First of all, it is extremely difficult to integrate diverse systems since an air transport hub needs a variety of complex systems such as scene surveillance radar, airport panoramic monitoring, airport collaborative decision-making (A-CDM), delay information release, air traffic control coordination, meteorological observation and intelligent building management system (IBMS), to get the goings of an aircraft, the airspace, the situation on the ground as well as passengers flow of the public transport.Secondly, the lack of linkage between multiple departments such as the airport operations center (AOC), the terminal operations center (TOC), the ground transportation center (GTC), local municipal departments (rail transportation, health and epidemic prevention departments) and public security system, often result in data isolations. Finally, the chronic issues of inadequate data space attributes, fragmented scenes, and unintuitive interactive interfaces existing in the traditional airport management system itself are also the hurdles to overcome in the new airport construction. To build digital twin airports with a unified scale, caliber and interfaceTo cope with these problems mentioned above, 51WORLD and the China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology jointly created a digital twin airport system- the cloud mirror system. At present, the system has been landed at some airport in the north. Compared with the traditional flat data center, the “cloud mirror” can map and feedback the aircraft’s take-offs and landings, cruise status as well as apron safety monitoring in space coordinates, attribute real geographic space coordinates to vehicles and aircraft, open up data isolations, and improve the effect and efficiency of information management. The standards boiled down to “three unifications”-namely, unified scale, unified caliber, and unified interface. The unified scale attributed a uniform, an identical coordinate system to the airport’s objects, data and information flow to clarify the location and status of objects such as aircraft, ground vehicles, IoT terminals, passengers, and staff. After integrating the spatial data of BIM, 3DMAX, CAD and GIS, 51WORLD and the team of China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology mapped and connected the real geographic information coordinate system, quickly generate the airspace and city floor of hundreds of square kilometers of L2-L3, terminal buildings and apron road lines of L3 with 51Urbandata, thus constructing a digital twin base and laying a foundation for further comprehensive management. The unified caliber enabled the system to access multi-format, multi-form and multi-connotation data such as the surveillance radar, apron panoramic monitoring system, airport collaborative decision-making system (A-CDM), delay information release system, air traffic control coordination system, meteorological observation system, intelligent building management system (IBMS), IOT system, video surveillance, perimeter security system, etc., to achieve joint control of airport management. Both teams preset management objects such as aircraft and ground vehicles that could be driven by real-world operating data with independent semantics, which could be managed individually or jointly to form the object of a dynamic digital twin. For example, the operators could learn, in real-time, the current or past working status of the digital twins of ground-based operating vehicles such as bird-repellent vehicles, ferries, tractors, snow-sweepers, weeding vehicles, etc. with the data of their positions, speeds, and turning angles. In the event of an incident, the operator could check it back immediately.▲Ground vehicles managementThe unified interface empowered the system to manage the airport with one single screen by means of information integration, SOA, and SSO. At the same time, it was capable of allocating corresponding operating and data permissions for different personnel, posts and users according to the regulations, to ensure that the rules were strictly implemented and the personnel coordinated freely. When the scenes of the aprons and terminals ere highly accurate, services such as pedestrian thermals, vehicle dynamics, V2X simulation, driverless training, and traffic flow simulation could be introduced to preview the emergency management and airport construction scheme in the digital twin airport interface, providing the managers with an intuitive decision-making basis. It was worth noting that, via 51WORLD cloud rendering technology, workers could get the same operating experience and visual effects in the mobile applications as in the mainframe, and reversely control airport equipment to ensure high utilization of the system.Digital Twin Airports: addressing the issues of the present and being future-orientedThe digital twin airport greatly enhanced the efficiency of data analysis and business management, and provided intuitive and visual solutions to various kinds of problems in airport management, enabling airport managers to enjoy the technical dividends of digital twins. In terms of aviation, the system focused on the management of airspace radar, flight schedules, real-time flight monitoring and reviewing, runway take-off and landing occupation, airspace safety, UFO intrusion, weather, visibility, and control information.Aircraft posturesIn measuring how busy a route was, the system could generate a thermodynamic chart of each route by analyzing the time occupancy ratios, and present the monitoring results via the voxel grid after superimposing all the charts of the routes. In traditional large-screen mode, the results were often carried on multiple interfaces and presented in three views respectively, which could be converted into readable information only after the interpretation and recognition of a professional. On the contrary, in the cloud mirror system, an operator could easily arrange the flights and the routes within one interface. In terms of ground operations, as 51WORLD incorporated the surveillance video into the digital twin, combining the various sensors deployed in the airport perimeter, the system was able to issue warnings on unusual behaviors such as intrusion, unauthorized operation, speeding, and overtime working, thus safeguarding the operations on the ground. The interface of ground vehicles managementAs the accuracy of the digital twin airport improves in the future, the system can also calculate the blind areas and visual fields of monitoring, analyze the distribution of security, and help the managers to draw up proactive security strategy. In terms of the terminals, functions such as public transportation, building management, and visitor services could be loaded to connect with digital twin park solutions. At the same time, in line with national new infrastructure construction and to build a safe, green, intelligent and humane airport, the cloud mirror system also added in V2X communication, laser/mm-wave/ vision, vehicle dynamics, unmanned training set, advanced process simulation (APS) connecting capabilities. In the near future, the digital twins of unmanned shuttle buses and unmanned logistics vehicles can be realized on the same platform, which is convenient for the airport to expand related services.ConclusionAs the transportation hub of a city, an airport is a gateway and window for the city to demonstrate its achievements in smart construction, and a safe, green, intelligent, and humane airport speaks volumes for the city. The intelligent infrastructure and the traditional infrastructure are both indispensable for constructing a safe, green, intelligent, and humane airport while the digital twin technology is the bridge between the two, according to Zhang Kunqi, the manager of 51WORLD Pre-Sales Program and Ecological Partnership Department participating in the project. The business capabilities and technical strengths of the China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology and 51WORLD were highly valued by each other. The success of this project couldn’t be separated from the professional advice and decades’ accumulation of the Academy in civil aviation safety, operation and development while 51WORLD delivered leading digital twin products and services. In the future, 51WORLD and the Academy will continue to work together in constructing safe, green, intelligent, and humane airports to help the long-term and healthy development of China’s civil aviation industry.
How to Update Smart City Operating Platform from GIS to Digital Twins, We First Need to Answer a Philosophical Question|51SHARE
How to Update Smart City Operating Platform from GIS to Digital Twins, We First Need to Answer a Philosophical Question|51SHARE
The editor’s note:He studied in China’s best GIS major and turned down a postgraduate recommendation from his university. He rode 6,000 kilometers to see the great landscape of China. He maintained that the dimensions of the application of geographic information data should be elevated and a unified structured semantics is a key to earth cloning. He is Yang Jianshun, a system architect of the all-element scenarios team at the 51WORLD Earth Cloning Institute. Today we invite him to talk about GIS, digital twins, and Earth cloning. The essence of the world can be regarded as a monophysical entity organized by a unified all-element semantics.Part.1 Stepping out of the geographic information systemWhat is the essence of the world? This philosophical question is a probing and pragmatic question for 51WORLD’s system architects. When I applied for the GIS major at Wuhan University, my idea was simple — I liked geography and wanted to travel all over China like Xu Xiake, a renowned geographer in the 1600s. It was also at Wuhan University that I came up with the idea of digitally depicting the earth we are living in.Yang Jianshun51WORLD coins the idea as Earth Cloning, in which geographic information data is still one of the underlying foundations, only with the dimension of the applications being raised. After graduation, I was recommended to Beijing Normal University for a postgraduate degree. But as time went on, I found myself not interested in academics. Therefore, I dropped out of school and was eager to put what I have conceived into practice.Since then, I have accumulated ten years of 3D GIS-related working experience in technology, products, and markets.Looking back, the development of China’s geographic information industry is relatively smooth in general. Over the past five years, 3D GIS players and platforms, as well as the corresponding government and market needs, are emerging in this fledgling industry.Inevitably, technical inertia and stereotypes appeared. Traditional geographic information industry attached great importance to data, but without adequate data value mining; data analysis was paid enough attention but short of an effective expression of the results. There was a gulf existing between the status quo and the ever-changing needs of Party A. In traditional 3D GIS R&D, the engineers chose to self-develop a set of engine platforms, on which the geographic information was presented. Some of these engines were revamped on the basis of open-source engines (such as WorldWind, OsgEarth, CesiumJS, etc.) while others were developed from scratch. As far as I know, there are hundreds of digital earth platforms developed in China alone. This was also what I’ve been doing for a long time: processing geographic information data efficiently under limited hardware and software conditions, and presenting it as best as possible. But in terms of the larger industry, everyone has made much the same thing, with no substantial let alone game-changing breakthroughs. There were no fundamental differences from the platforms of a decade ago other than the optimization of performance and efficiency. In recent years, Internet giants such as HBAT(Huawei, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent), as well as digital twin startups such as 51WORLD, have tended to assimilate real-time GIS data from the Internet and the Internet of Things, which approach may not be that precise, but makes GIS data alive. The concept of upgrading basic data such as geographic information before applying is also gradually impacting the industry. After joining 51WORLD, I discussed with Wu Yaguang, the dean of the Earth Cloning Institute, for many a time. He is an expert in computer graphics and I have been working on 3D GIS for many years. Our cross-sector exchanges inspired each of us on data organization, graphics rendering, and interactive applications, especially on the technology path of how to clone the earth.Everyone makes different decisions at different times. Looking back, further study might be helpful for my future life, but I don’t regret giving it up since I enjoy and excel at what I am doing.Part.2 Exploring deeply in the Smart CityA smart city is a market with massive potentials. Traditional GIS enterprises have built up a plentiful understanding of the business and data in addressing the customers’ pain points. They still take the lead as the first movers in the industry after the 3D GIS was introduced. We should admit that we are standing on the shoulders of giants.51WORLD enters the market with its eyes on computer graphics and computer vision. It has delivered a large number of digital twin products of buildings and industrial parks and tried out in city-level applications. But in general, 51WORLD is still a new player and has a long way to go.51WORLD Earth Cloning 3 (EC3)For now, we are not yet able to process and analyze large-scale geographic information independently. However, as a technological startup, 51WORLD’s digital twin products have the advantage of short production cycles, fast iterations, consistent quality and great scalability. Archer Li, the company’s CEO and founder says 51WORLD has three “not to does “.First, instead of collecting data sources, we focus on data fusion.Second, instead of delivering general integration services, we sharpen our competitiveness in the core products of the all-element scenarios.Third, instead of venturing into vertical industry applications alone, we are glad to co-develop with our ecological partners. These guidelines determine 51WORLD’s business models and market strategies. As far as I know, some companies in the industry, especially many start-ups, go out of their ways to get a project and in the end, have to outsource the software and adopt project-based management. This labor-consuming approach is actually detrimental to the growth of a company. Issues such as lengthening project cycle and slow repayment resulted from demand changes and chaotic management, may bring down a company. However, in the domestic market, whether you can directly solve the problem for Party A is a matter of life and death. So someone has to do the basic work. In this process, we mesh with industry partners and general integrators to provide them with standardized digital twin services. The cake of the smart cities is huge and the enterprises need to know their boundaries. But as one of the R&D personnel, I know, apart from sharpening our competitiveness, we should also strengthen our weak points, among which are the processing of multiple data sources and business-oriented data analysis.Part.3 Digital twins: real data applications of elevated dimensionAs the company expands, the direction of our R&D gets more diversified and the Earth Cloning Institute feels the pressure. For example, the burgeoning demands for oblique photography, BIM, and CAD data processing at this stage are actually what the R&D is calling for after receiving the feedback from the market. The more diversified the market needs, the more we need to focus. The technological team should have its own independent thinking in choosing the research direction, to lead the development of the industry, to explore the frontline standards, and to develop more innovative and game-changing products. This is the only way to clone the earth. But no matter which specific R & D field we are aiming for, we are looking for a way to create digital twin earth, to clone the planet we are living. This colossal project starts with data collection, in which the data of different dimensions are exhaustively gathered in various ways, to replicate the real world. This is also what many industries including geographic information are doing, from vectors and rasters in traditional GIS to oblique photography and laser point clouds, as well as BIM in the construction industry and high-precision maps for autonomous driving in transportation, etc.But the method of creating business applications directly in this “replicated world” is not necessarily viable since the lack of a unified structured semantics will affect the final effect. So what is a unified structured semantics? We believe that the earth is made of elements. Whether it is a vector, raster, grid, or point cloud, it is a form of expression of the elements. All elements need a unified structured semantics to describe and interpret. For example, we can understand the buildings through the semantics of the contour, height, color, material, and building structure, etc.Without a structured semantics, all we see is triangle grids or point clouds connected together. All industries need to extract their “customized” data standards and specifications. Therefore, we regard the nature of the world as a monophysical entity organized by a unified all-element semantics.Future data format shall not only conform to the standards of the data producers or one individual industry but also take into account more knowledge including multi-industry data production, multi-engine platforms, and multi-industry applications. Therefore, these “definitions” need to meet a higher level of standards, thereby ensuring the independence of standards in various fields while achieving an inter-industry data connection.51WORLD Digital Twin ShanghaiIt is based on this concept that 51WORLD presents the region’s all-element scenarios(AES), including the scenes of cities, roads, buildings, and vegetation from the real world, featuring in virtual reality, geographic information reality, physical simulation reality, and real-time free interactivity. It is also with AES that we create a digital twin of the real world. In the future, we will phrase in some processing standards for AES semantics to promote the industry. 51WORLD stays committed to cloning the earth and the aspiration of creating a realistic, complete, and lasting digital twin world remains firm. And that’s what I’ve been dreaming of for years as a GIS student.

The hyper brain solves real problemsAs an important joining point in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, Tongling has achieved remarkable results in smart city construction over recent years. It endeavors to promote the applications of emerging technologies such as big data, cloud computing and AI and was named as one of China’s pilot smart cities and one of the demonstration cities of the Broadband China project.Initiated by the Data Resources Administration of Tongling city, the Hyper brain, which is built as the fundamental base for a digital Tongling, is a set of comprehensive application tools for urban governance, management decision-making and public services designed by the leading tech company iFLYTEK with several next-generation of information technologies such as 5G, digital twin, big data, AI, IoT, etc.Hu Qisheng, the mayor of Tongling city, spoke highly of the Tongling Hyper Brain and called it the most shining pearl in the crown of the digital Tongling.“It has achieved a comprehensive perception of urban problems, scientific decision-making in urban operations, and efficient co-processing across different fields, significantly promoting refined governance of Tongling city.”The Hyper Brain consists of 1 data center, 2 core applications ( social governance and decision-making ), 3 major capability platforms (AI, digital twin and an open platform for sharing capabilities),4 supporting systems (standard specifications, operation management, security facilities, and IT facilities), and is implemented in terms of 3 aspects, namely, perception, operation center, and application scenarios.Livelihood Service of Urban Hyper Brain51WORLD created the city’s digital twin platform, built a digital urban skeleton of more than 50 square kilometers and restored key areas of 15 square kilometers with the digital base plate construction technology of 51UrbanData. The platform met the requirements for sustainable growth of a digital twin city and was completed timely to enable rapid implementation of the iFLYTEK project. Backed by the AI capabilities of iFLYTEK and 51WORLD’s digital twin platform, Tongling Hyper Brain covered 27 intelligent scenes of 6 categories in urban governance, community management, security, people’s livelihood, environmental protection and macro decision. Since people’s livelihood has always been a paramount concern for Tongling Municipal Government, the Hyper Brain incorporated multiple practical functions such as caring for the elderly living alone, monitoring slag truck dump and managing occupied road.Tongling digital base plateWang Juefen, a 78-year-old woman living alone in Tongling, has seen the presence of digital technologies in her daily life. The smart electronic camera installed by her community could record and analyze the data of the elderly living alone in and out of their homes, and compare them with their travel routines based on AI and infrared monitoring technologies. The community workers will be automatically alerted by the Hyper Brain if anything unusual happens.Combined with the AI and facial recognition of iFLYTEK, the digital twin platform can also show the trajectory of the elderly’s recent activities near the neighborhood. The application of intelligent scenes in the Hyper Brain addressed many practical problems in a more humane way. Since the project was officially launched, the amount of urban incidents discovered has increased by 900%, and the duration of incident handling has decreased by 70%.The staff of Tongling data center observing the scenarios of urban management through the Hyper BrainiFLYTEK stated currently the Hyper Brain intelligence center was capable of image analysis, intelligent voice, data analysis and space-time computing, the AI capabilities of which, running on the 51WORLD digital twin base plate, could integrate intelligent discovery and spatial geographic information, and improve readability, feasibility and efficiency in visual applications.By the end of 2020, Tongling Hyper Brain will achieve the landing of 50 scenes in 6 categories, the better of which will be promoted across the city to cover larger areas and serve more people.Hyper brain Community ManagementThe application of Tongling Hyper Brain has made three historic leaps in local urban governance: from government affairs to urban business, from manual troubleshooting to intellectual discovery, and from discrete governance to collaborative governance.2. The unprecedented epidemic outbreak put the Hyper Brain to the testIn fact, the Tongling Hyper Brain was put into trial operation in November 2019. Just three months later, it was under the stringent test of the COVID-19 outbreak and sustained. On January 24, Anhui Province launched the first-level public health response for COVID-19. The next day, Tongling reported the first case and the outbreak has gained momentum since then.Due to the great scalability of the Hyper Brain, 51WORLD and iFLYTEK launched the COVID-19 prevention and control module within just one week, achieving 3D visual display of epidemic distribution, trend prediction and designated hospital presentation, which helped the local government in controlling the disease to a great extent.COVID-19 prevention and controlAccording to Zhong Jian, the person in charge of the Hyper Brain, the system gave full play to its capabilities of data aggregation, mining and analysis. It compared and analyzed the colossal data of more than 1.7million citizens with the data gathered during the outbreak, providing reliable evidence for issuing health codes and permits for people in and out of an agricultural market.Backed by the data in the administration, it can comprehensively perceive the urban human flow and present the epidemic data in the digital twin counterpart, which assisted wise decisions for the city managers. The intelligent image analysis of the Hyper Brain helped to identify exposed garbage, occupied roads, illegal construction, and non-motor vehicle parking and enabled off-site and non-contact enforcement for the managing department during the outbreak, which reduced the risk of spreading the epidemic and protected the city’s environment.Slag car managementAt the same time, the Hyper Brain platform assimilated the information of regional surveillance cameras, major events, blacklist alarms and the heat of human flow in railway stations, government agencies and shopping centers and presented it onto the digital twin base plate, offering the basis for security control in key areas.“These down-to-earth functions in the Hyper Brain played a crucial role in controlling the outbreak and highlighted the value of digital twin technology.” Wang Qingtao, a 51WORLD city partner participating in the project, said.3. Evolving urban hyper brainThe construction of an urban hyper brain is a long-term and ever-evolving process of improving the intelligent level of urban governance with means of AI technologies. In building the digital twin base plate, 51WORLD took into account the complexity of urban management businesses and detached them from the operation center. This low-coupling architecture, which enabled rapid upgrade and required low maintenance cost, also made room for subsequent application expansion and business connection.Digital Twin base plate connecting IoT51WORLD’s contribution to this project was highly valued by iFLYTEK: “51WORLD has delivered professional, efficient and high-quality service in the Tongling Hyper Brain Project and we hope the two companies will cooperate in more fields related to digital twins.”Urban governance is an endless game and the evolution of the hyper brain never stops. Next, Tongling Hyper Brain will continue to focus on addressing new issues of urban governance, promoting innovation, creating more application scenarios and sub-brains on the basis of its architecture, in order to make the city more and more intelligent.

How to Build a Digital Twin City in the Wave of New Infrastructure Construction? | 51SHARE
Editor’s note: digital twins come under the spotlight as new infrastructure construction deepens. New smart city, the main battleground of this strategic move of China, becomes one of the most important application scenes of digital twins. The upsurge of attention will undoubtedly speed up the applications of digital twins to smart cities; however, overheating also impacts the market to a certain extent. The rush movement of the clients resulted from inadequate comprehension of the overall structure of digital twin cities often leads to repeated and inefficient construction, while the speculations spurred by insincere or inept suppliers in the wake of digital twins fever ultimately harm the users’ enthusiasm for new technologies.Under the circumstances, we hope to contribute some rational analysis and overall thinking to the market. In this issue of 51SHARE, we invite Xiaolun Liu, 51WORLD products and solutions director, who is a seasoned and perceptive expert on the presentation and functions of digital twins in the terminal markets and superstructure construction, for his insight on digital twins in constructing the new smart city. The real-time mapped model platform of city information is the core of digital twin city construction.Originated in the high-end manufacturing companies, digital twin technology capitalizes on the data of physical models, sensors and operating history, integrates the simulation processes of multiple disciplines, physics, scales, and probabilities and completes the mapping in the virtual space to reflect the whole life cycle of the real counterpart. The direct contact with the frontline market makes us realize that the vigorous construction of a fully perceptive and fully connected smart city system has ushered in a new round of digital twin exploration. In terms of policies, on April 10, China unveiled a plan on promoting the transformation of enterprises toward digitalization and intelligence by further expanding the application of cloud and data technologies. The plan, which was jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Cyberspace Administration of China, listed seven technologies such as digital twin, big data, AI, and 5G as common and key technologies in digital transformation. One chapter was especially devoted to digital twin innovation projects, in which the government suggested to engage all parties to participate in the digital twin solutions. Shanghai municipality proposed to deploy common intelligent sensing devices in the construction of the IoT infrastructure to provide rudimentary public services while building a digital twin city base during the optimization and upgrading phase in the Lingang New Area of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, according to telecommunications infrastructure guidelines for the area throughout 2025 released on April 20.On the same day, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) clarified the scope of new infrastructure as covering information infrastructure, integration infrastructure, and innovation infrastructure for the first time. That is exactly what 51WORLD is capable of. 51WORLD seamlessly integrates all kinds of infrastructure, overlays big data, cloud computing, 5G, and artificial intelligence to modernize urban governance, and provides digital bases for urban running and industry applications. In recent years, driven by concepts such as “Digital China” and “Smart City”, digital twin cities construction has shifted from planning to scale implementation. Strategic areas across China, like Xiong’an New Area, Guiyang City, Chongqing City and Nanjing Jiangbei New Area, successively rolled out policies to assimilate digital twins in the top-level urban design, the tech of which was suggested to be built in as the core base for the intelligence center of a new smart city.As practitioners, we are pleased to see that the scientific governance of national new areas, represented by Xiong’an New Area, has seen some achievements through simultaneous planning, construction and operation of the digital twin cities and their physical counterparts.Part 1 Architecture of Digital Twin CitiesDigital Twin City Architecture from Digital Twin Cities Research Report (2019) of the CAICTThe CAICT specifies digital twin cities as new smart cities equipped with a set of technologies and applications in its overall layout. As can be seen, the digital twin cities consist of the new infrastructure, intelligent operation center, intelligent application system in the horizontal direction, and of urban security lines and standard specifications in the vertical direction. The new infrastructure includes Omni territorial awareness facilities (including pan-intelligent municipal facilities and urban components), network connectivity and intelligent computing devices. The intelligent center is the concentration of the capabilities of a digital twin city, a city brain that builds the city’s digital base by managing the perceptive facilities and integrating big data and information models. It is the hub of accurate mapping and interaction between the virtual and the real.Meanwhile, it delivers services of scenes, data and simulation through the common technologies enabling and application supporting platform. The applications of digital twin cities, equipped with the digital twin base and operation enabling platform, provide development and expansion capabilities for various government offices and vertical industries, such as parks, factories, ports and airports, as well as joint actions of emergency command and grid management to achieve 3D visualization, simulation, prediction and policy decision.Judging from our practice in multiple smart city projects, the integration of multi-disciplinary technologies and multi-source data is pivotal for the success of digital twin cities. Some differences exist between a digital twin city and an intelligent city even the two share the same overall structure in general. First, a digital twin city extends and strengthens the technical applications such as 3D modeling and simulation of various elements of the urban space.Second, the core platform enhances all-element digital expression, big data model drive and reverse intelligent control, and underlines a more integrated application system, highlighting the cross-domain and cross-sector application mode with a global perspective. On this basis, the twins of a digital city and a physical one achieve one-to-one mapping and interconnection. The simulation of planning, building and running in a digital twin city makes for the best solutions for constructing a physical city. At the same time, the perception and feedback of real-time operation of the physical cities can be fully reflected in digital twin cities, forming a benign closed-loop of urban governance. The Relationship between the Digital Twin City Core Platform and the Traditional Smart City Platform, from Digital Twin Cities Research Report (2019) of the CAICTPart 2 The real-time mapped urban information model platform is the core of a digital twin city. The interaction of a digital twin city with a real one needs an intuitive, efficient, and open platform. Therefore, we believe that the real-time mapped urban information model platform is the core of digital twin city construction, the comprehensive information carrier of depicting the details of the city, presenting the urban situation, and deducing the future trend.Urban information model platform refers to the 3D model with urban semantic information, the data results of semantic modeling, whose functions are mainly composed of model data source acquisition, digital twin model platform construction, data presentation, and model rendering. The three-tier architecture of city information model platform from Digital Twin Cities Research Report (2019) of the CAICTThe whole picture and running status of the city presented by the city information model platform lay a strong foundation for data-driven governance. The platform incorporates the city big data and constructs a digital base of the city which is necessary for new smart cities. At present, the digital twin city construction platform, represented by 51UrbanData, has evolved to mature applications which can be reflected in every dimension of the smart city operation. The model platform integrates not only the static data but also various types of urban running data and IoT- aware data. In terms of simulating city operations, the platform deduces urban development trends with simulation and deep learning technologies. As for real-time presentation, integrated with the operating data of smart terminals, the platform visualizes city running and dynamically warns of urban issues. Apart from these functions, the platform can rapidly simulate the results from the city managers’ decisions, on the basis of which select the optimal choice.Digital twin technology has been widely recognized and valued by the smart city industry. In October 2019, the Research Report on Digital Twin Cities, an authoritative report led by China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT) that directly affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, was unveiled for the first time. The report, jointly released by 51WORLD, Huawei, Alibaba and other institutions, introduced digital twin technology of the manufacturing industry into smart cities construction, made guidance for the architecture, key technologies and typical cases, and promoted cooperation with leading providers in relevant industries such as new mapping, urban modeling, data platform and industry applications.Part3 ConclusionsWe believe that constructing a new type of infrastructure is not starting from scratch, but is embedded in the process of smart city construction.Information infrastructure makes efficient transmission of city information a reality. Converged infrastructure creates an intelligent application scenario based on traditional infrastructure. Digital innovative infrastructure renders smart city expansion and upgrades possible. As part of the digitalized infrastructure, digital twins run through the construction of smart cities, meeting varied needs in applications of new area planning, urban construction, and city governance. It can preview and simulate the deployment of the information infrastructure as well as visualize aggregated data in real-time. In decision-making, digital twins support the integrated urban management system to make full use of the city’s massive underlying data, thus improving the management to a great extent.51WOLRD’s digital twin technology and service ecosystem, buttressed by its digital twin all-element scenes platform, can build a service center of technologies and application scenes, integrate urban data resources, activate scene applications of the dimensional upgrade, and effectively connect physical spatial data, digital twin scenes, and industrial applications to give full scope to the effectiveness of new infrastructure, ultimately enabling all aspects of the new smart city.We see that digital twins are creating real values for smart cities. But there is still a long way to go. With the booming of digital twin technology, the foundation of new infrastructure must be consolidated to make the city really smart.

The plan, which was jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Cyberspace Administration of China, attached the same importance to digital twins as big data, AI and 5G. One chapter was especially devoted to digital twin innovation projects, in which the government suggested to engage all parties to participate in the digital twin solutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought digital transformation to the forefront and creates demand for simulation capacities. New infrastructure construction, digital twins and industrial internet have been the subject of lively public debates for months. In the wave of new infrastructure construction, digital twins come under the spotlight as local governments rolled out relevant policies and many experts and industrial authorities draw the public’s attention to digital twins.ExpertsGuangnan NiDigital twin technology/platform in the industrial internet can be used as one of the carriers of industrial software. On April 18th, Guangnan Ni, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering delivered a keynote speech entitled “The Goal of the Industrial Internet” at the online symposium on industrial internet and smart software, organized by the China Academy of Industrial Internet. Ni’s opinion on the goal of the industrial internet boiled down to three points: first, to improve the industrial foundation and advance industrial chain. Second, to coordinate the development of industrial internet and industrial software. Third, digital twin technology/platform in the industrial internet can be used as one of the carriers of industrial software.According to academician Ni, industrial internet in the manufacturing powers had all been buttressed by industrial software over the decades, such as ANSYS of the United States, Dassault of France and SIEMENS 4.0 of Germany. Among them, the German industrial 4.0 emphasized the physical integration of information systems, reflecting the effect of the industrial software while US GE’s Predix highlighted the twin digital technology. He believed that the ever-expanding digital twins effectively integrated the physical space and the virtual space with the support of modeling and simulation. He said that based on traditional industries and information technologies, application integration and technological innovation should be achieved in industrial interconnection to build a new industrial system.( Ni Guangnan, computer expert, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, researcher of the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences )Chunhua ChenChen Chunhua: the real world and the digital world are not separated from each other, but are integrated through digital technologies. On April 9, Professor Chunhua Chen shared her idea on how to become effective managers and accelerate the digital transformation of enterprises in a cloud dialogue hosted by the China Enterprise Reform and Development Society. “The fundamental challenge of digitalization is to reconstruct the real world into a digital one. One of the essential features of digitalization is the integration of the real world and its digital counterpart. I quote one phrase-digital twins, in other words, the real world and the digital world are not separated from each other, but are integrated through digital technology. In the first half of the internet, what we discussed most was the impact of the virtual economy on the real economy. I do not fully agree with this statement, because the virtual economy doesn’t necessarily undermine the real economy. While we enter into the second half of the internet, the virtual and the real must be integrated as online and offline are inextricable from each other. This is the essential characteristic of digitalization. It is not that the virtual economy disrupts the real economy. It is up to us to integrate the virtual with the real and create new values. ”she said.(Chen Chunhua, K.C. Wong Chair Professor at Peking University, Dean of BiMBA of National School of Development, Peking University)PoliciesXiong’AnXiong’An: synchronize the planning and construction of a digital Xiong’An and a real one to create a world-leading digital twin city with deep learning capabilities. In terms of urban intelligence management, the Outline of Xiong’an Planning suggested to synchronize the planning and construction of a digital Xiong’An and a real one, properly deploy intelligent infrastructure in advance and establish a big data asset management system to create a world-leading digital city with deep learning capabilities. In terms of industrial internet, the province suggested accelerating the fostering of new industrial ecology, expand the scale of the digital economy, establish research institutes, and put forward a systematic approach for the development of the manufacturing industry. One after another, local governments come up with policies to guide digital twin city construction and the implementation of supporting measures are also gaining momentum. In February 2020, Shanghai issued Several Opinions on Further Speeding up the Construction of Smart Cities to explore the digital twin city construction, digitalized simulation of all elements of urban ecological resources, and the feasibility of building a digital base for intelligent management; In 2020, Haidian District of Beijing put forward that it would carry out the construction of urban brain step by step and create a spatial-temporal data map of the digital twin in Haidian District with the help of urban planning, construction and management; In 2019, Guiyang proposed to build a digital twin city, starting from the governance of micro ecological systems such as super-large community and street blocks;Zhejiang Province has released a pilot implementation plan for future community management, in which nine scenarios were formulated and the requirements for building a realistic digital twin community were put forward;Zhoushan City, Xixian new area, Chongqing municipality, the integrated demonstration area of Yangtze River Delta and other places have adopted the digital twin mode, successively formulated the top-level design and planning of smart cities, and encouraged digital twin-oriented construction;MediaXinhua.com commentary: the digitalization of manufacturing industry enables the enterprise to collect colossal industrial data from facilities, systems and software, depicts a digital twin of the manufacturing industry in the virtual world, forms more abundant and complex data resources than the consumer sector, and become the source of the digital economy. On April 15, Xinhuanet published a commentary on new infrastructure promoting the integration of the virtual economy and the real economy, in which the author stated that “on the one hand, industrial data enriches data resources. The digitalization of manufacturing industry enables the enterprise to collect colossal industrial data from facilities, systems and software, depicts a digital twin of the manufacturing industry in the virtual world, forms more abundant and complex data resources than the consumer sector, and become the source of the digital economy. On the other hand, massive circulation of data brings about innovative values. The integration of the virtual economy and the real one opens up physical data fragmentation and breaks down virtual data barriers, achieving unhindered flow of the data and generating new values, new models and new industry.”Outlook Weekly: the national high-performance digital twin and knowledge infrastructure provide a colossal and open foundation platform for economic and social development. One article on the intergenerational leap of the new infrastructure in the 16th issue of Outlook in 2020 pointed out that “ new infrastructure, in the narrow sense, is about digital technologies and intelligent infrastructure of modern energies, advanced materials and green manufacturing such as 5G, data center, artificial intelligence, industrial internet, light source, square kilometer array radio telescope (SKA), new energy vehicle charging facilities. The national high-performance digital twin and knowledge infrastructure provide a colossal and open foundation platform for economic and social development and ensure unobstructed flow of the materials, energies and information as well as a more secure chain of supply, industry, innovation, values, talents, capital, polices and information, reducing resource misallocation, elevating utilization efficiency, and improving productivity and competitiveness, which are conducive to a better life for the public “Industry AuthoritiesDr.Zhou BowenZhou Bowen of JD: the goal of new infrastructure construction is to create a twin digital world that matches our physical world.Dr. Zhou Bowen, vice president of JD.com, chair of JD technology committee and president of JD cloud & AI, once said in an interview that “the goal of new infrastructure construction is to create a twin digital world that matches our physical world, in which we can move the bits at our will and increase the motion rate of atoms to an extraordinary level”.Xiaopeng AnXiaopeng An of Alibaba: in the future, two systems will coexist in this society, one is the physical world we see, and the other is the digital twin that we cannot see.Xiaopeng An, the vice president of the Aliresearch, delivered a resounding speech at China’s Information Society 50 Forum. In the Digital Infrastructure: The Iron Foundation Leading to the Digital Twin, he stated that “from the perspective of infrastructure construction, digital technology is about deconstructing an old world and building a new one, a digital twin. The world of digital twins is to reconstruct the orbit of atoms in the ocean of bits. By mutual mapping, real-time interaction and efficient coordination between the physical world and its digital counterpart, digital twins build an operational framework of the material world in the vast sea of bits, a new system of the massive collaboration of human society. In this sense, digital infrastructure is the foundation of building the digital twin world.New technologies are leading us to a brand new world and that will last for 20 to 30 years. The ultimate layout of a digital society is to construct a digital twin world in cyberspace that is ubiquitously connected to the physical space. It maps the real world with real-time linkage, accurate feedback, and systematic autonomy. With the booming of new technologies, methods and models, the interaction between the physical world and the digital world will evolve from static and dynamic to real-time, which will drive the digital twins of cyberspace to be infinitely close to the real space. Optimized resource allocation combined with both physical entity and digital twin will become the ultimate digital layout. In the future, two systems will coexist in this society, one is the physical world we see, and the other is the digital twin that we cannot see, while digital infrastructure construction is to build a digital twin world that connects with the physical one, to serve the people better, for a better life.

Digital Twins Named As Key Technology for Digital Transformation, Same as 5G and AI, NDRC| New Infrastructure Focus
Digital Twins Named As Key Technology for Digital Transformation, Same as 5G and AI, NDRC| New Infrastructure Focus
On April 10, China unveiled a plan on promoting the transformation of enterprises toward digitalization and intelligence by further expanding the application of cloud and data technologies. The plan, which was jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Cyberspace Administration of China, attached the same importance to digital twins as big data, AI and 5G. One chapter was especially devoted to digital twin innovation projects, in which the government suggested to engage all parties to participate in the digital twin solutions.Vowing to accelerate the digitalization among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the plan expounded China’s path of economic digital transformation, which was of great significance for the industrial positioning of digital twin technology and charted the course of next-phase application. How important are digital twins?Wu Hao, the director of the Department of High-tech Industry of the NDRC, the core unit responsible for drafting the plan, stated in March that the digital economy was an important engine for economic growth and the industry should address the prevalent problems that some enterprises were incapable of, unable to or apprehensive of digital transformation.Besides offering guideline for addressing these issues, the plan also outlined China’s economic digital transformation as efforts should be made to nurture new business models of the digital economy, foster supply chains of data and forge a digitalized whole-industrial-chain ecosystem.Digital twins are promising in every aspect from production to operation, from enterprises, industries to clusters. Its huge scope in applications made it abreast of emerging technologies such as AI and 5G in the plan, which was also its highest-profile appearance.▲51WORLD Digital Twin Smart Factory Operating SystemThe government and enterprises should accelerate the R & D and application of common and key technologies in digital transformation, explore the next-generation digital applications and integrated innovations such as big data, AI, cloud computing, digital twins, 5G, IoT, and blockchain among qualified industries and enterprises, support common development platforms, open-source communities, common solutions, basic hardware and software, and encourage open source development of relevant codes, standards and platforms.Digital twins were listed along with well-known and widely applied technologies such as big data, AI, cloud computing, 5G, IoT, and blockchain. The NDRC also vowed to accelerate the R & D and application of common and key technologies in digital transformation. The integrated innovation mentioned in the plan was also noteworthy. Digital transformation in many industries is a systemic problem and no technology is invincible at all times. The same is true of digital twins. An open, integrated and platform-oriented digital twin is the future direction of this industry. The state is making more efforts to encourage cross-industry alliances among industry leaders and Internet enterprises, to establish a transformation service platform, cross-disciplinary technical research and industrial cooperation. This is what 51WORLD aims for──to further build a developer ecology and common development platform, and it is also how the company assists in the digital transformation of industrial partners with its all-element scenario.▲ 51WORLD Digital Twin Traffic Simulation Cloud Control PlatformDigital twin solutions raised on the agendaThe ultimate goal of technology is to solve real problems and the NDRC’s recent work initiatives emphasized formulating digital twin solutions. The state encourages various forms of innovation among research institutions and industry alliances, to engage all parties in the digital twin solutions to address the issues existing in digital infrastructure, common software and application scenarios faced by enterprises in digital transformation. The plan aspires to promote the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), underlining the meshing empowerment of platform-based enterprises to SMEs. One the other side, platform-based enterprises themselves are in the constant process of digital upgrading and need cooperation with traditional enterprises.51WORLD’s business layout echoes NDRC’s guideline in digital transformation. According to the NDRC, digital transformation imposes multiple hurdles in digital infrastructure, common software and application scenarios on enterprises. The government will set up a number of benchmark enterprises and engage the platform-based enterprises with SMEs to create typical application scenarios. Buttressed by 51WORLD’s cutting-edge all-element scenario, the full-fledged 51Developer Plan-51WDP helps industry integrators and developers share digital twin technology dividends and quickly sharpen their competitiveness with 51Cloud, 51SuperAPI and real-time editing platforms. On April 1, 51WORLD unveiled its 2020 spring digital twin applications in ten fields with its ecological partners to facilitate the construction of new infrastructure.▲51WORLD Digital Twin Power Equipment Operation SystemDigital Twin UpgradeThe NDRC serves as the beacon of China’s economic development and its motions are undoubtedly the subjects of intense study and observation for the government, enterprises, the media, citizens, investors, domestic and foreign institutions. The upgrade of digital twins in the paper of the NDRC indicates that the government has realized the strategic importance of this emerging technology on the state level. The NDRC revealed that the digital transformation ratio of China’s enterprises was about 25%, far lower than Europe’s 46% and the United States’ 54%. More than 55% of companies had not yet completed the digital transformation of their basic infrastructure. Of the 25% of enterprises engaging in digital transformation, most were involved in basic cloud service, and in-depth business of big data and intelligence was inadequate. After unveiling the plan, the NDRC officials stressed that the digital transformation of the traditional industry should take account of current epidemic control and economic status, to nurture new development represented by the digital economy, and promote good practices across the country. The NDRC would further organize and implement pilot projects in the follow-up.It is foreseeable that many projects on digital twin will be carried out in domestic research institutions and industry alliances. 51WORLD hopes to take this opportunity to provide better upgrade services to industries and customers in helping the country’s new economic strategy.
