 EC5-51WORLD’s 5th earth clone summit, which is technology-filled and future-oriented, was held on August 18th, 2022, at 51WORLD's newly opened 255,000 m2 metaverse space-51Island. During the conference, 51WORLD released its newly upgraded product matrix, including 1 platform, 2 products and 3 industry applications, which will enable the digital twin industry enter the "L4+W4" stage and contribute to the digitization of Web 3.0 toward a new era.   Yi Li, founder, and CEO of 51WORLD, mentioned that "Oriented to the Web 3.0 era, we are required to possess sufficient technical capabilities to empower our partners and offer products and applications with all-new values to the industry. So far, 51WORLD has formed a new generation of product matrix ranging from platform to product and then to ecology, assisting enterprises in iterating demands and providing new solutions."  ‍As important part of this conference, Yi Li released WDP, a new iteration of the digital twin PaaS platform; MS2, two upgraded metaverse applications, 51Sim, a simulation test platform for autonomous driving; and 51ISE - a new generation industry simulation algorithm platform for three major industry applications, TOC - a twin space operation service platform, and 51CIM – a city information model platform.   As a result of the new generation of product matrix, the conference is full of highlights: All-element scene (AES) goes into mass production at L3, official launch of the 100 Digital Twin City Plan; newly upgraded MS2, a metaverse application, fully empowering the implementation of large-scale meetings and exhibitions in the metaverse; 51Sim adheres its original intention of openness and open source being open + open-source to empower the mass production of Autonomous driving via a data-driven closed loop of a home-grown self-research platform; benchmark use cases in three application directions are available to the public for the first time, and industry applications advance further.  01Autonomous Mass Production of AES at L3 AccuracyA 100 Digital Twin City Plan Officially Launched Since the release of WDP4.0, a new-generation digital twin PaaS platform, in Sep. 2021, 51WORLD has kept a three-monthly iteration rate, dedicated to offering a digital twin creation platform that is of "low threshold, high quality” to every industry. Up to now, over 25,000 developers have worked with 51WORLD to upgrade the new digital twin PaaS platform. As underlying support for the PaaS platform, AES has been upgraded with breakthroughs and is now officially in mass production in the L3 era. At the conference, Yi Li officially announced the "100 Digital Twin City Plan" and pointed out that 51WORLD will upgrade the digital twin base of 100 cities to L3 accuracy as of the end of December this year, starting from August 2022.  "This major upgrade of AES will enable more effectiveness, less required storage space and higher speed," Yi Li stressed at the conference. Among them, as for more effectiveness, Autonomous generation of AES will be greatly beyond the effect of L2, modular generation at L3 is comparable to the accuracy of manual modeling; as for less required storage space, only one-third of the storage space is required compared to that of at L2 in tradition; and as for higher speed, modular generation at L3 just takes 1/2 time that of at L2, which is a significant increase in efficiency. In addition to AES, a simultaneous upgrade is realized for DaaS digital asset library, Editor non-linear editing, API, and Cloud native based on the WDP platform. 02Upgrade of MS2Official Launch of 255,000 m2 Metaverse In the Web3.0 era, every enterprise should be equipped with an exclusive metaverse space, just as necessary as an official website in the Web1.0 era and an APP in the Web2.0 era. The 51WORLD metaverse application provides companies with consumers, goods, and scenarios in the metaverse era. The 51WORLD metaverse applications are characterized by three highlights: immersive and realistic scenarios, unique digital avatar, and open and convenient creator tools. The newly upgraded MS2, with an extra-large space of 255,000 m2, is a metaverse application designed for large-scale activities such as conferences, expos, etc. The entire venue is in the shape of a five-petal flower, of which each petal is an independent exhibition hall of 51,000 m2.   Besides Hall A, which was firstly opened for EC5, the rest four halls will be opened one after another from September to December.  Unlike 2D video conference that brings a uniform communication feeling, the metaverse enables interaction that shows individuality and a sense of expectation because of the unpredictability of what will happen next.   0351SimAccelerated Closed-loop Driven by Data for Autonomous Driving 51Sim is the domestic auto industry simulation software developed by 51WORLD with a R&D investment of over 100 million RMB over 5 years. Up till now, 51Sim has formed a sound product ecology, with the implementation of closed-loop cloud simulation that is driven by data, which is independent and controllable, and high confidence perception simulation that is deeply integrated with software and hardware, and full-stack simulation that is integrated with software and hardware through open source.  Right now, Autonomous driving is on the eve of mass production. 51Sim has formed a full industry ecology targeting the market demand and built a series of benchmark cases, such as HAOMO.AI (a data-driven cloud simulation), Horizon Robotics (a computing platform for perceptual simulation), a multi-vehicle platform for SMVIC, etc. 51Sim will also keep in line with the market to accelerate the implementation of China's Autonomous driving mass production through deep industry integration, domestic open-source controllability, and a data-driven closed loop.  04Three Industrial ApplicationsEnable the Full Entry of Digital Twin into L4+W4 Stage Accuracy Level and Application Dimension are two keywords in describing the industry application of digital twin, where digital twin scene is divided by five levels from L1 to L5, and there are five application stages from W1 to W5. Yi Li said in his speech, "Currently, the industrial application has evolved to L4+W4 stage. Oriented to a new trend, we will present the debut of benchmark cases of three industrial applications."   01 51ISE, a new-generation industry simulation algorithm platform W4, a new stage of deepening evolution of the digital twin, is in dire need of support from a cross-industry simulation platform. 51ISE comes into being as the times require, which integrates industry algorithm simulation, engineering system simulation, natural environment simulation, social activity simulation, and emergency simulation in one and has been applied in fields such as industry, energy, water conservancy, rail, transportation, etc. Numerous cases have been implemented so far. Take smart factory as an example, 51ISE can restore every robot arm, every part and every craftsmanship exactly like those in the real world. Such an advanced approach for manufacturing can be used to build a digital twin factory efficiently and cost-effectively, and applied in the full lifecycle of simulation for factory design in its early stage, factory construction in its middle stage, and factory operation in its later stage.   As part of the construction of a smart factory of CREG (China Railway Engineering Equipment Group), 51WORLD enables auxiliary decision-making in terms of production process optimization, quality control, O&M of equipment and management of energy and carbon peak & neutrality, with the ISE platform as the base and the digital twin technology as the core, thereby contributing to the digitization of the factory.   02 TOC, an operation service platform for twin spaces Distinct from traditional IOC products, the TOC platform features six core capabilities: realistic digital twin scene, Spatial-temporal computing, open editing, full process simulation, presence services, and multi-terminal interaction. Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City (YZBSTC) in Hainan Province, which is the first to integrate the capabilities of the 51WORLD TOC platform, is empowered with a digital twin for park management, comprehensively reflecting trends of all aspects and speeding up digital construction. Moreover, a second upgrade is realized for TOC Low Carbon Smart Community, which provides managers with more smart decision support based on green energy construction and investment by region-wide carbon monitoring, carbon planning simulation and carbon emission prediction.   03 51CIM, a new generation information model platform for digital twin cities "As a city seeks growth, infrastructure is required at first. Likewise, the infrastructure for the digital economy is required for its development. Undoubtedly, city-level L4 is precisely one of the infrastructures for the digital city of the future," Yi Li believes.   51CIM creates an infrastructure base in terms of data use path, scene use path, scene accuracy, interaction depth, etc., for further advancing the construction of smart cities. It is characterized by multi-source data fusion, multi-precision scenario operation, high-performance computing, efficient & open maintenance, and re-use of data elements, which can meet requirements for system construction, such as wide projects range, long time period, high data security, outcome data reusability, etc. 05 Eight Industry ExpertsElaborate on Industry Development in the Metaverse Era 51WORLD invited experts and scholars from various fields, such as government, technology, finance, consumption, etc., in the metaverse forum in the afternoon to share their ideas.  As a representative of the government, Niu Hailong, Executive Deputy Director of Beijing Central Business District Management Committee, shared his thoughts on "Beijing CBD Accelerates the Construction of a Digital CBD to be a Benchmark District with Global Influence". Up to now, over 25,000 developers have worked with 51WORLD to upgrade the new digital twin PaaS platform. As underlying support for the PaaS platform, AES has been upgraded with breakthroughs and is now officially in mass production in the L3 era. At the conference, Yi Li officially announced the "100 Digital Twin City Plan" and pointed out that 51WORLD will upgrade the digital twin base of 100 cities to L3 accuracy as of the end of December this year, starting from August 2022.  "This major upgrade of AES will enable more effectiveness, less required storage space and higher speed," Yi Li stressed at the conference. Among them, as for more effectiveness, Autonomous generation of AES will be greatly beyond the effect of L2, modular generation at L3 is comparable to the accuracy of manual modeling; as for less required storage space, only one-third of the storage space is required compared to that of at L2 in tradition; and as for higher speed, modular generation at L3 just takes 1/2 time that of at L2, which is a significant increase in efficiency. In addition to AES, a simultaneous upgrade is realized for DaaS digital asset library, Editor non-linear editing, API, and Cloud native based on the WDP platform. 02Upgrade of MS2Official Launch of 255,000 m2 Metaverse In the Web3.0 era, every enterprise should be equipped with an exclusive metaverse space, just as necessary as an official website in the Web1.0 era and an APP in the Web2.0 era. However, we should be sober that digital twin technology is complex and the industry should not blindly follow the trend. We ought to be persistent in creating the hard-core products of digital twins, to be worthy of this exquisite, mysterious and wonderful digital twin era.01 The digital twin revolutionizes the worldThe digital twin is prevailing in various industries. It has been a buzzword in the last two or three years at home and abroad, with a stunning number of studies and researches. The concept has been identified by many institutions as one of the top strategic technology trends that affect the world.National ministries such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Science and Technology, rolled out policies and supporting programs to promote the basic research and applications of digital twins in the industrial and urban fields. Local governments are scrambling to build the first digital twin city while the industry is racing to come up with the latest digital twin solutions in order to take the lead in this cutting-edge technology.The digital twin has permeated the society in fields of the government, industries, factories, and cities. It has become the law of digital development about which everyone is talking about. That’s why the industries, capitals, and policies are rushing into this technology.Digital twins are indeed popular now.Conceptually, the digital twin reaches a wide range of audiences in only a couple of years as the buzzword is vivid and straightforward. Technologically, the ever-changing information technologies have made most people deeply convinced in the vision of digital twins. From single-point applications to integrated innovations, the digital twin is the milestone in China’s information-oriented development, and it may be the starting point of humans striding into the intelligent era. Exciting roads await.In terms of values, as China is reforming its administrative system, constructing a city of digital twin will reshape the urban digital genes and modernize the governance system. The digital twin redefines intelligent industrial parks, creating a new model of multi-dimensional performance management while the digital twin factories provide the best solutions for digitalizing the whole procedure of manufacturing including design, production, and assembling. As for the digital twin of the human body, it is opening up a new world of medical services with its unique perspective.Digital twin transforms the world. As the ancient Chinese Sage Lao Tse once stated that all things under heaven sprung from the existed and the existed sprung from the non-existed, the digital twin exemplifies the relationship of the existed and the non-existed in virtualizing the real world.The ubiquitous perception and integration, the interaction between the virtual and the real, they support and complement each other. The digital twin enables accurate mapping and perceptive insights even without venturing outside. Most intelligent city construction is still in its infancy of industrial information building, for want of technical and business architectures for the integrated urban governance. Hardware and software infrastructure, data, algorithms, technical capabilities, toolsets, and block applications are difficult to be incorporated into one architecture, to form a scalable functional system for further iteration. A vacuum exists in discrete, ineffective and inefficient managing systems. It is a daunting task to synchronize the management of different regions, lines and blocks.Digital twin reconstructs the overall architecture of smart cities. In terms of technologies, the digital twin city model platform incorporates the underlying infrastructure, static and dynamic data, core system and technical capability, applications and supporting system, achieving collaborative governance and the integration of the real and the virtual. The underlying infrastructure, consisting of traditional information infrastructure and the new infrastructure, reshapes the urban digital genes and creates an intelligent operating environment with its powerful abilities to perceive, transmit, compute and control.Therefore, the advent of digital twin cities provides an opportunity for and chart the course of reconstructing the overall architecture of a smart city and specifies the levels and paths of integration. Digitalized contactless post-Internet life experiences such as online education, medical treatment and cultural performances greatly enrich the life of the public and give the citizens more choices. In the future, the urban form will lean towards digital aggregation and physical separation.The digital twin is devoted to improving modern governance. The COVID-19 pandemic exposes serious deficiencies in the global governance system such as the incapable emergency response mechanism, inadequate disease control plans, inaccurate information release, lagging public opinion guidance, inadequate resource allocation and insufficient decision-making ability. Although smart cities have played a significant role in containing the epidemic, the problems of unscheduled resources, unanalyzed data, unorganized manpower and inefficient network persist. Cooperative citizens and responsible local governments have become the backbone of China’s fighting against the epidemic.As Lao Tse pointed out that action should be taken before a thing has made its appearance and order should be secured before disorder has begun, the all-element expression, visualization of multidimensional data and scenes, spatial computing, overlaying analysis, simulation and remote control of the digital twin city as well as the derived abilities to identify urban risks, observing city operation, tracking trajectory, controlling events, deducing, simulating emergency plans and allocating resources, echo with the demands of modern governance in innovation, coordination, prevention, supervision and organization, making it a major booster for improving the governance system.The wave of new infrastructure is accelerating the development of digital twin cities. Given the complexity of digital twins, enterprises that underestimate the difficulties of implementing digital twin, being reluctant to invest in R&D and unwilling to seek industrial collaboration, are unlikely to succeed or go too far in the market.Currently, it is pressing to construct the digital twin cities while the technical solutions are far from mature. Although some encouraging progress has been made in visualizing city modeling, there is still a long way to go. Therefore, in order to promote the implementation of digital twin cities, on the one hand, the government should actively unleash the data and related resources to pave the way for piloting digital twin cities. On the other hand, the mechanisms should be integrated to establish adaptive organizational and business structures.The industry should actively build a complementarily cooperative ecology, to consistently verify the implementation of the solutions. Scientific research institutions should lead their way in innovation and strengthen relevant visionary basic research, removing the obstacles for governments and industries in implementing the digital twin cities.Never forget why you started, and you can accomplish your mission. Like every revolutionary technology, digital twin cities were questioned at the very beginning. People worried that in the gigantic network of a digital twin city, the city’s activities would all be under surveillance. It will be like a digital prison in which the citizens lose privacy and their actions are monitored. The concern is not without reason. For brutal managers, a digital twin city might be a disaster for the people but for the righteous ones, a digital twin city will increase the well-being of the people.Powerful technical means make the city smarter, more harmonious and efficient and the service more diverse, convenient, proactive and personalized. The management of the intelligent city is shifting from governance to services.
